Whether your lifts carry people or equipment, it is essential that they operate safely. The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) set out that all lift operating systems periodically undergo a thorough examination. The purpose of this is to identify any existing or potential faults and determine whether the lifts are safe to use. All “dutyholders”, that is, lift owners or people responsible for the safe operation of a lift, must ensure that these examinations are carried out at statutory intervals. This is usually every 6 or 12 months, or after significant changes such as failure of the lift, damage to the lift or periods of disuse.

Thorough examinations involve a detailed inspection of the lift and associated equipment by a competent person, who will also determine if additional supplementary tests are necessary.

Once the examination is complete, a written report is supplied to the dutyholder, who is legally obligated to keep the report on record. The report will include specific information required by LOLER including details of any defects that could become dangerous, repairs or action to be taken and any tests carried out.
